My Daily Banana

Event of the day:

24th May 1830

The nursery rhyme “Mary had a little lamb” was published in United States. It was based on a true life story, a girl named Mary Sawyer one day took her pet lamb with her to school and Sarah Josepha Hale wrote the rhyme about this happening. Not a history changing story but the event is thought of every time a child recites this rhyme. Imagine will anyone quote or even remember one of your doings in 186 years time?

Mary had a little lamb,
its fleece was white as snow,

And everywhere that Mary went,
The lamb was sure to go;

He followed her to school one day--
That was against the rule,

It made the children laugh and play,
to see a lamb at school.

And so the teacher turned it out,
but still it lingered near,

And waited patiently about,
till Mary did appear.

"Why does the lamb love Mary so?"
the eager children cry.

"Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know."
the teacher did reply
.

Does anyone remember Paul McCartney and the Wings singing the Nursery Rhyme?

Well here it is, I found it on YouTube:

Birthday of the day:

24th May 1941

Bob Dylan

One of the greatest American songwriters of the last century. The songs Blowin’ in the Wind and Mr. Tambourine Man were penned by him, he has written numerous songs that never will be forgotten. Every now and then there comes out a rumor, that he is to be nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature, one day that will happen. He is one of the few modern day poets that have reached all the people of the world with his work.

A fun video from and with Bob, The Subterranean Homesick Blues from 1965

Mr. Tambourine Man, Live at the Newport Folk Festival 1964. I think the man introducing him is Pete Seeger one of the great in folk, I recognised his voice.

Died on this day:

24th May 1995

Our Harold Wilson

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976.

The last of the great Labour Leaders, Tony Blaire was a New Labour Leader.

The one thing I will always remember him for is; in 1969 the government abolished the death penalty. From now on the judges wore their black caps only for ceremonial duty. I can remember very well reading about this in the Daily Express and talking with June the secretary in the office where I worked at Clark’s Crank and Forge, Lincoln. For me that was a happy day.

Non Cycle ride of the day:

It was raining and I don’t like riding in the rain (I might melt). The roads get slippery and I’m very unstable when this happens. I’ve got enough scars to show how dangerous cycling is on wet roads.

My new sportscam arrived. It’s a Virb Elite from Garmin .I thought, put the battery in and start filming, didn’t work, I had to go to my local computer shop and buy a micro SD chip. What a crap, I paid nearly €400 to buy the camera and there isn’t even a memory card in it. Well I bought one, rigged the camera up and now I’m raring to go off on the cycle. Today we are going over to Sylt, have a walk around see what’s happening. It’s the Harley Days this weekend; there will be a few hundred of them there. Its fun watching them arrive in Niebüll, where the train leaves for the island. Most of the Harleys are ridden by their owners but a good many are taken there in lorries or closed trailers. Those are the bikes that only come out for a couple of rides a year and never get dirty.

Bye, see you all tomorrow. Have a good day
