Name of the day:

Gordon

Derives from a Scottish surname meaning „spacious fort", also a Clan in Scotland „The House of Gordon"; not as many think „Gordon’s Gin"

My father George, worked in his young years as a joiner, for the clan chief the Earl of Huntly, at the Huntly Castle, Banffshire, Scotland

Ice cream cone makes its debut

in St. Louis, Missouri, United States at the Saint Louis Exposition. It was said, that the ice cream vender ran out of bowls, so he used rolled-up waffles to serve his ice cream.

What would we do in summer without them? Slurp the ice cream out of our hands, lie on the beach with a bowl and? I know you can get waxed paper cups with dinky plastic spoons, but that’s not the same. Let’s honour the ice cream cone for valuable duties deemed to mankind.

Make your own, it doesn’t seem to be that much work (go to the link below):

Here is a tune where Nelson sings with Wallon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson

Adolf Hitler, German Dictator (1936-45), commits suicide at 56
No one, in their lifetime, has caused as much terror and pain as this man. Through him many have died Jews, Brits, American and many Germans. Shame on him! I hope the Autobahn took him straight to hell.

Only one thing positive can be said about the War. The End (and the get together of my mother and father)
Charlie Chaplin as the Dictator

Cycle ride of the day:

Well today the wind has changed from East to West. I expect the weather to change. The cycle round was very pleasant. I did a count of zero cars in the back roads.

Heike was at Kirsty’s, so I did a short detour; I can’t miss out on seeing the little ones. Martje was kaputt, she had been to the kindergarten this morning and was tired out from playing. She didn’t want to be photographed, she didn’t want a drink out of my water bottle and worst of all she didn’t want a kiss. The little one, Gretje was in the pram, this morning she had a vaccination and was sleeping it off. Like me after a drink.

The Challenge:

All's quiet on the Western Front. I'm doing FDH (friss die Hälfte! English: Eat half  of the normal!) and sport; cycleing, walking and gymnastics. It's time for you, my challengers, to get worried, Monday's payday ;-)

Bye, see you all tomorrow. Have a good day :-)

English and Scottish parliaments accept Act of Union; form United Kingdom of Great Britain

I wonder if Scotland will stay part of the Union after the Scottish independence referendum on Thursday, 18th September 2014. If it becomes independent, will I need a new passport? Will they put up border crossings to keep out the Sassanachs? The Roman Hadrian built a wall to keep the Scots out of the Roman Empire, maybe the Scots could revamp the wall;-)
Will the Union Jack look like this?

Lonnie Donegan

in Bridgeton, Glasgow Scotland

Died 3rd November 2002

in Peterborough, England

About twenty years ago, I saw him live in Tondern, Denmark. It was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. He played skiffle Rock-a-Billie and a melody of his famous hits from the fifties and sixties. Who can’t remember „My Old Man’s a Dustman" or „Does Your Chewinggum Lose it‘ Flavour? (on the bedpost over night)"

Watch the two videos below, it’s worth it!

Cycle ride of the day:

Today was a good day, none of the heavy traffic as of yesterday. Where I had twenty cars passing me, today I met not one. That’s the way I like it; when I get my head down pacing the kilometres.

See the pictures; isn’t that a sorry sight? Yesterday the patch of land was glowing with dandelions and today! I know they’re a menace to have in the lawn but they do look good when they are blooming.

Bye, see you all tomorrow. Have a good day

The first allotment garden (Schrebergarten) was grounded by Pastor Schroder, in Kappeln, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

For my German speaking followers (you could also say that I’m too lazy to translate my own text):

Der Pastor bekam kein Gehalt, sondern ein Grundstück zur eigener Bewirtschaftung. Durch eine plietsche Eingebung (oder einfach Faulheit) teilte er den Grundstück in 24 Parzellen und verpachtete sie an einzeln Personen mit der Vorgabe, dass sie ein Verein gründen sollten. Pastor Schroeder hat such dann als Vorsitzender des Vereins ernannt; und hat eine Satzung erstellt.

Typical aerial view of an allotment garden

We also had an allotment garden, here in Niebüll, back in the 1980's. Fresh vegetables, fruits and a playing cum learning ground for our children.

Back in 1984, when we travelled over to Perth, Aussieland to visit Mama and Papa; it was strawberry time. As we couldn’t be there to pick them and we didn’t want the birds to feast on the sumptuous fruits. We asked a local handicapped home (die Mürwicker) if they would like to harvest the strawberries, in return were to keep the garden, weeding, mowing and such things.

When our holidays were over and we went back to the garden our neighbours had many tales to tell us about how comically they harvested and kept our garden, talking to the flowers and enjoying themselves.

Football manager. 1966, he managed the English national football team that won the World Cup. The best team England ever had and will ever have. The names of the players are immortal, Bobby Moore, Nobby Stiles, Gordon Banks, Geoff Hurst

Cycle ride of the day:

Wind, wind, wind; this north-east wind is getting on my willie. Today it souped up again to about five-six Beaufort. That wasn’t too bad, the sun was beating down and we had seventeen degrees centigrade.

In one of the crofts, in the backfields, there was a daffodil gathering, not the daffodils, the people wanting to see, worship, buy them or just be seen amongst the „in-Crowd“. I cycle the roads around there because it’s very quiet and hardly any cars pass me; in three days maybe one. Well this weekend it was like riding along main roads, I had continuous traffic coming from the front and the rear. I’m glad, cycling wise, that the weekend’s over.

Sheena (Shirley Orr) Easton

in Glasgow Scotland

I remember in 1980, seeing a British television documentary of a young singer from Scotland. She was young, sweat and had a great voice; destined for a great career. After seeing the documentary I forgot about her until the song „9 to 5“, reached the European charts in 1981.
Her best song ,until now was a country song, a duet with Kenny Rogers „We’ve Got Tonight“

David Scarboro

Sadly commited suicide at twenty, from Beachy Head, East Sussex, England
Born 3rd February 1968 in London, England
In 1985 he played the part of Mark Fowler in the „EastEnders“, but was written out of the series when he refused to play the part of a racist. He then withdrew himself from public appearances until the British tabloid started printing inaccurate stories of his life. In April 1988 he jumped from Beachy Head.
Another proud press achievement!
Watch a tribute to David Scarboro by his brother Simon

Cycle ride of the day:

That was a ride, great!
Another week and I’ll have reduced my weight enough to sail on my racer. I’m not going on it before I weigh under one-hundred kilos! Hope it won’t be an anti-climax.
During the winter I gained more than ten kilos, I’ve lost three unto now, another five will be perfect; then I‘ll be down to ninety-five.

Fraser, how about it? Want to take on a challenge, which of us two can lose five kilos the fastest?

Bye, more again tomorrow. Have a nice day :-)

Photo of the day:

A Friesen door. The door is a carpenter’s master piece and the path with the two hedge rows running at ninety degrees to the door, artistic. That’s what you get when you can afford a landscape architect as-well-as a building engineer.

Event of the day:

Worst nuclear disaster, 4th reactor at Chernobyl USSR explodes, 31 die. The follow up is also disastrous; it left burnt earth that can never be walked on by man again. A sarcophagus was built over the reactor but that is now porous and has to be renewed; a never ending epic disaster.

They never learn; look at Fukushima, Japan. How can an intelligent nation, like Japan, build a nuclear plant near a joint in the earth’s shelves? It wasn’t the earthquake that damaged the plant but the tsunami that was triggered off by it.

Macabre is; that Germany ruled to shut down all of its nuclear plants and turn Green because of this, Japan on the other hand is turning her plants on again.

Cycle ride of the day:

I arrived at the train crossing in Legerade and to my dismay they were closing. Oh well, a short pause after an hour of going flat-out, not a bad idea, but after five minutes a train rushed by and the level kept its position. Mist, another five to ten minutes of waiting, no thanks, the sweat on my skin is starting to form icicles (as a matter of speech, it’s seventeen degrees centigrade).
There’s a narrow dirt track running parallel to the tracks, I’m riding a cyclo-cross racer so the paths mine. The first time I’ve ever ridden a dirt-track on this bicycle. Wow, it was easy; I didn’t know I had that much control over my bike, when bent down grasping the bottom level bars.
After a mile or so, a bridge had to be crossed, the path is about fifteen degree steep with a hundred-eighty degree bend, three metre diameter. The climb isn’t the problem, it’s the bend. I was clicked into my pedals so I couldn’t put my feet down if it got tricky and it did, I was too slow and nearly tipped over, but nearly isn’t down kissing the ground, I recovered the bike and also managed that feat. I’m a hero;-)

More again tomorrow, have a nice day, be happy:-)
