My Daily Banana

Event of the day:

29th May 1980

Today is our Opal Wedding Anniversary

Our wedding photo.

We have not changed much, have we?

Thirty-fourth years of living together, they have run by like wildfire. I cannot say they were all bliss, I’ve got blisters to prove it, but I really am glad we stuck it out. Some years were a real bind and others were living in luxury, I’d say there were many more good times than bad
Here in Niebüll we are well known, always having a stroll, hand in hand, like young lovers. I think you can leave the young out of that sentence. When we are not together we will are asked, “where’s did you leave your better half?”
Our wedding, so long ago but still in my mind. We were to go to England on our honeymoon. I had an Airplane ticket for Heike and I was travelling there by car, it didn’t work out that way though. Heike was three months pregnant with Gordon and before we went to the registrar’s office she had an appointment with the gynecologist. He forbade her to travel, neither via airplane nor car. What now? Throw away out holidays, no! I went over to England and Heike went to her parents and two weeks later I picked her up and we travelled home. That was our honeymoon; we did have one together though about ten years later in Torremolinos, Spain.

Birthday of the day:

29th May 1949

Francis Rossi

One of the founders of the group Status Quo back in 1962, he is the lead singer and the lead (ha,ha) guitarist. I laugh because he still can’t play the instrument. Despite this small matter the group have lasted over fifty years and are still going strong. One of my first singles was Pictures of Matchstick Men from 1967, that was one of the best that they have recorded.

I saw them live 1970 in Lincoln, it was in a blow up tent at the race ground down Carholme Road. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown was on the bill also. Do you remember his hit Fire?

Fire

In the tent, which was packed with maybe five hundred youngsters there was a rocker group and the scum of Lincoln The Clan got wind of this. They staged a siege at the end of the concert, hauling rocks, sticks and bottles at the tent entrance so that nobody could get out. It couldn’t have been too bad though cause eventually we all did exit and I can’t remember anyone getting hurt.

Died on this day:

29th May 1994

Erich Honecker

The last dictator of Germany, well the last communist party president of East Germany. A silly little man, well described by Udo Lindenberg in his song Sonderzug Nach Pankow.

After abducting from his reign 1989 of East Germany he fled to South America where he lived with his wife Margot quietly until his death in 1994.

Non Cycle ride of the day:

I was tired so I took the day off from cycling. Work didn’t go down too well either, I managed to get six hours and three A1 plots together. That’s quite good really, this month has been atrocious, I haven’t even got fifty hours to bill. That means digging into the cookie glass (my reserve), to pay for all the bills. Another four years of worry and then I can live from the state, I don’t expect to stop working straight off though, my work is much too interesting. Like today I got an order to build a drawing template, I will be doing that in Microsoft Visual Basic for Visio. It’s a great feeling when I get the computer to work for me instead of just hacking in data.

Bye, see you all tomorrow. Have a good day
