Roger McGuinn aka Jim McGuinn
Guitarist and one of the founders of the Byrds. I saw them live in Bardney, Lincolnshire 1971. They played unplugged; it was a great gig. I can't remember what they played but they recorded many a hit in the late sixties and seventies, such as the Bob Dylan song Mr Tambourine Man or my favourite Eight Miles High
Died on this Day:
13th July 1995
Godtfred Kirk Christiansen
The third son of the Lego founder Ole Kirk Christiansen. He became the managing director of the Lego Group in 1956, when his father died in 1958 he became president and in 1960 after buying his brothers out the sole proprietor.
The company name Lego comes from the Danish words led godt; in English "play good"
Thoughts:
Yesterday I had a great Saturday afternoon stroll through Niebüll. After thirty-four years you would think I know every nook and cranny of the town, but I don't. We went into the Christus Church for the first time; when I think about it we haven't been in the Apostol Church in Deezbüll (that's the southern part of Niebüll) either.
The Christus Church is quite plain if compared to the parish churches of England. I put it down to the different sources of religious affiliation: The Church of England was formed by King Henry VIII and he stole all the existing churches from the Roman Catholic Church and forced his religion (which is very similar to the Roman Catholic's) on them: whereas the German Protestant Church was sparked off by Martin Luther who in 1517 nailed his Protestant thesis on the door of the All Saint's Church in Wittenburg. The Protestant church started from scrach and as can be seen in their churches they were a very sober folk.
