My Daily Banana

Photo of the Day:

The aliens are landing in Niebüll;
the small cloud in the middle looks like a silk cocoon

Event of the day:

The Hollywood sigh was erected a hill overlooking Hollywood, Los Angeles, California
To beginn the sign was Hollywoodland but after being renovated in 1949 the last four letters were removed.

Birthday of today:

13th July 1942

Roger McGuinn aka Jim McGuinn

Guitarist and one of the founders of the Byrds. I saw them live in Bardney, Lincolnshire 1971. They played unplugged; it was a great gig. I can't remember what they played but they recorded many a hit in the late sixties and seventies, such as the Bob Dylan song Mr Tambourine Man or my favourite Eight Miles High

Died on this Day:

 13th July 1995

Godtfred Kirk Christiansen

The third son of the Lego founder Ole Kirk Christiansen. He became the managing director of the Lego Group in 1956, when his father died in 1958 he became president and in 1960 after buying his brothers out the sole proprietor.
The company name Lego comes from the Danish words led godt; in English "play good"

Thoughts:

A lazy sunny Sunday afternoon, well nearly; it's ten in the morning and the sun doesn't want to come out from behind the clouds, it's Sunday though. One out of four facts right, I should go into politics.

Yesterday I had a great Saturday afternoon stroll through Niebüll. After thirty-four years you would think I know every nook and cranny of the town, but I don't. We went into the Christus Church for the first time; when I think about it we haven't been in the Apostol Church in Deezbüll (that's the southern part of Niebüll) either.

The Christus Church is quite plain if compared to the parish churches of England. I put it down to the different sources of religious affiliation: The Church of England was formed by King Henry VIII and he stole all the existing churches from the Roman Catholic Church and forced his religion (which is very similar to the Roman Catholic's) on them: whereas the German Protestant Church was sparked off by Martin Luther who in 1517 nailed his Protestant thesis on the door of the All Saint's Church in Wittenburg. The Protestant church started from scrach and as can be seen in their churches they were a very sober folk.

The bell tower is built outside the church, typical for the churches of this area

Private pews for the gentry of times long past

The pulpit; contrary to the rest of the building the pulpits and the altars are elaborately decorated

The font

There is only this small stripe showing the original ceiling decoration

After so much culture we needed a cappuccino and a glas of sparkly water

What a beautiful rose!?

Have a good Sunday and cross your fingers for the German soccer team

See you all tomorrow xxx
