My Daily Banana

Event of the day:

29th May 1980

Today is our Opal Wedding Anniversary

Our wedding photo.

We have not changed much, have we?

Thirty-fourth years of living together, they have run by like wildfire. I cannot say they were all bliss, I’ve got blisters to prove it, but I really am glad we stuck it out. Some years were a real bind and others were living in luxury, I’d say there were many more good times than bad
Here in Niebüll we are well known, always having a stroll, hand in hand, like young lovers. I think you can leave the young out of that sentence. When we are not together we will are asked, “where’s did you leave your better half?”
Our wedding, so long ago but still in my mind. We were to go to England on our honeymoon. I had an Airplane ticket for Heike and I was travelling there by car, it didn’t work out that way though. Heike was three months pregnant with Gordon and before we went to the registrar’s office she had an appointment with the gynecologist. He forbade her to travel, neither via airplane nor car. What now? Throw away out holidays, no! I went over to England and Heike went to her parents and two weeks later I picked her up and we travelled home. That was our honeymoon; we did have one together though about ten years later in Torremolinos, Spain.

Birthday of the day:

29th May 1949

Francis Rossi

One of the founders of the group Status Quo back in 1962, he is the lead singer and the lead (ha,ha) guitarist. I laugh because he still can’t play the instrument. Despite this small matter the group have lasted over fifty years and are still going strong. One of my first singles was Pictures of Matchstick Men from 1967, that was one of the best that they have recorded.
Pictures of Matchstick Men
I saw them live 1970 in Lincoln, it was in a blow up tent at the race ground down Carholme Road. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown was on the bill also. Do you remember his hit Fire?

Fire

In the tent, which was packed with maybe five hundred youngsters there was a rocker group and the scum of Lincoln The Clan got wind of this. They staged a siege at the end of the concert, hauling rocks, sticks and bottles at the tent entrance so that nobody could get out. It couldn’t have been too bad though cause eventually we all did exit and I can’t remember anyone getting hurt.

Died on this day:

29th May 1994

Erich Honecker

The last dictator of Germany, well the last communist party president of East Germany. A silly little man, well described by Udo Lindenberg in his song Sonderzug Nach Pankow.

After abducting from his reign 1989 of East Germany he fled to South America where he lived with his wife Margot quietly until his death in 1994.

Non Cycle ride of the day:

I was tired so I took the day off from cycling. Work didn’t go down too well either, I managed to get six hours and three A1 plots together. That’s quite good really, this month has been atrocious, I haven’t even got fifty hours to bill. That means digging into the cookie glass (my reserve), to pay for all the bills. Another four years of worry and then I can live from the state, I don’t expect to stop working straight off though, my work is much too interesting. Like today I got an order to build a drawing template, I will be doing that in Microsoft Visual Basic for Visio. It’s a great feeling when I get the computer to work for me instead of just hacking in data.

Bye, see you all tomorrow. Have a good day

I hope it gets bushy.

Event
28th May 1987
Mathias Rust lands on the Red Square

in Moscow with a private airplane. He was doing a training flight, one that is needed for the flight license. The training flight was supposed to be over home country, Germany, but some camel scratched his back and he flew to Moscow, Soviet Union. His reason, or so he says is the world peace. For this brave but idiotic feat he was detained for the next fourteen months.

Birthday:
28th May 1928
Giesela Schnier, maiden name Winter

My mother in law. As I remember her she was a very peaceful woman. I never saw her in a fret or get angry. Her life was work, hubby and the kids. It must have been very lonely for her when the children left home and Fritz died in 1987. She outlived him by eight years and passed away in August 1995.

Giesela was married to Friedrich Schnier (I wrote about him a couple of weeks ago on the 2nd May to be precise) and bore five children, Knuth, Edith, Peter, Heike and the nest chick Edeltraut. To begin with they lived in a two bedroom apartment until Fritz built a house in Bargenstedt, where they had the luxury of three bedrooms. One for the parents, one for the boys and one for the girls. Enough for those days, now it's much different if the kids don't have a bedroom on their own it's as if they live in poverty.

Died:
28th May 1977
King Edward VIII

Former King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. He was king for just over three-hundred days and was forced to give up the crown because of loving the wrong woman. Wallie Simpson, she was American, had been married twice, divorced once and was awaiting the second divorce to come through. That was too much for the parliament and the church. Edward being king was also the head of the Church of England and the religion did not agree with people remarrying when their former spouse was still alive.

Ride of the Day:
It's windy here in good old Germany. The trip took a little longer than in the past two weeks, I enjoyed it though. I'm repeating myself when I say "I like riding when the wind is blowing", up to nine Beaufort I have no real problems riding against head-on wind, the bicycle has between twenty and thirty gear ratios, from hard to very easy. I have used very easy only once and that was to climb a sixteen degree hill and that was no problem. The only think about wind that's not too nice is when it comes from the side and tries to throw me off the road. It's alright as long as there is no traffic then I have to keep a straight path which can be tricky. No need to philosophy on that now though, the storm winds come in autumn and that's months away.
I keep meeting new friends on my round

I don't know why the beehives are still next to the rape field,
the blossom is wilted

That's all for today, have a nice one. Greetings to all in England, now I've got two sisters there (well for a short time)

Masking Tape was patented by Richard Drews.

Masking tape, everyone uses it when decorating. Window panes, walls and windowsills are masked off when the window frame is painted or if car bodywork needs spaying the windows, the wheels everything that needs protection from the spray get masked off. The clou of the masking tape is the way it's wrinkled and very flexible, it can be stuck around corners, also the adhesive; the tape comes off the surface to which it is stuck without damaging it. The adhesive comes in a scale between 1 and 100, 1 being weak, painters tape is around 50 and DIY tape is weaker, so don't be surprised when your masking a big area when the first tape falls off before your finished taping everything off.

I've got that LP in my collection.

Birthday of the day:
27th May 1943
Cilla Black
Our Cilla with her Liverpudlian accent. Wasn't she sweet when she was young? Imagine those cheeks are now seventy-one years old. She had a great voice, when I saw that it's her birthday I immediately had the song in my head You're My World. It was in my mind although I haven't heard it since the sixties.

Died on this day:
27th May 1790
Jeremiah Carlton, laziest man in history, heir to a large fortune at 19 went to bed & stayed there for next 70 years, dies at 89

Thoughts of the day:
I didn't feel like cycling so I sat down and tried to philosophy on the days happenings, not the easiest things to do but (you poor sods) here what I brought to paper:
Here I am sat on the settee thinking about what to rant on about. Today started late, I slept or should I say I stayed in bed until 6:15 AM, there was loads of time to waste, I had an appointment at "The Dentist" at 8:15 and it just takes me an hour to get there. At last I had enough time and mind to shave my weeks beard off. It takes years off my face and I had to think of my "Challenge", every gram counts. Well it worked, this week I am 2400 grams lighter than last. How about my competitors? It's all very quiet on the Eastern Front, have you given up? I hope not, all three of us could do with a couple of inches less around the midriff.
Well today it took a little taken longer to get to Flensburg to keep my appointment, there had been an accident on the way. When I arrived at the incident the medics were loading the poor chap into an ambulance helicopter. It seems he had been on the scooter that was peeking out from the underneath of a car. Hope he wasn't hurt too badly, it could have been me or you, who knows when fate is going to catch you.
When at last I arrived at "The Dentist" my knees were shacking, I was scared he would niggle me like he did last Thursday. Thank Heavens, everything went well. The tooth was quiet and it could be filled. That took the whole of thirty minutes, so afterwards I had lockjaw, better lockjaw than two hours of pain.
I'm such a baby, I can't stand pain. It's a good job I wasn't born a woman. I would never have had a second child.
Not bad for not knowing what to write! I know it's drizzle but I managed to get some things off my chest and that can't be bad:-)

Listening to the street musician

Here's a small video to chill.
It's just a ten minute view of the road while we drink our cappuccino

Enough for today, more again tomorrow. Have a nice day.

PS When do you leave for Britain, Andrea? Enjoy your flight and stay:-)

Cycle ride of the day:
Same as usual, the weathers good, I’m feeling good and the kilometres fly by.
More interesting was my walk with Heike to vote in the European Election. We arrived at 12:50 PM and wanted to go to the café after to get our daily ration of caffeine. To our surprise we noticed they first open at one, poor waitress (she’s dotty as it is). I strolled into the café and ordered our drinks. That caught her on the wrong foot, it seems she can only overcome one task at the time and for her at that moment it was opening. I tried to help by taking our stools outside to the patio, but that wasn’t right either. Poor lass, I think she’s got the wrong job.
When, at last we had our cappuccinos on the table a beautifully revamped scooter with sidecar parked on the market square. That was something for my lens, I’ve always got my camera with me.
Here’s another photo series:

The Challenge:

Whose still taking it serious?
I am!
Last week I lost 2.4 kg, now I weigh 95.2 kg another hundred grams and I've lost the five kilograms which we are aiming to lose. How about you two?

Bye, see you all tomorrow. Have a good day
