Woody Guthrie

the father of Arlo Guthrie (I wrote about him last week 10th July; when Arlo celebrated his birthday)
Woody was a folk vagabond traveling the country with the restless during the Great Depression in the 1930's. He was a protest singer and had a sticker on his guitar that proclaimed "This Machine kills Fascists". His most famous song was "This Land is Your Land"

Richard MacDonald

co-founder of MacDonald's

No; he didn't die of obesity or of multiple mouth burns from hot coffee; he died at eighty-nine of old age.

Thoughts:

On Sunday we had a strenuous walk through the hostile countryside of North Friesland. We drove to the outskirts of Dagebüll and walked along the coast line into the thriving harbour town. No lie, it is thriving, the enormous parts for the wind farms in the vicinity are landed here before being transported in the evening-nighttime to the various building sites; also there is the port for the ferries to the islands of Föhr and Amrum and in most of the German counties the summer holidays have started; so daily hundreds of cars are traveling from here. On top of that the harbour village is growing; a local builder has constructed over a hundred wooden houses within the last three years. The owners of the houses do not live full time in their fabulous property; not because they aren't good enough, the houses are built to the best standards of modern housing, but because they are holiday houses.
Tonight Germany plays against Argentina in the Soccer World Cup! Who will win? I'm crossing my fingers for my chosen homestead Germany; they are going to win 3:1 (I'd say after extended time; so it's going to be a long night).

And, who won?
The German Soccer Team won its fourth star; not quite the forecast that I predicted, but extra time and the Germans won! Fabulous!!

Here some photos of our march through the moon landscape; it was rough dodging all the sheep droppings:

We arrived in the middle of nowhere

The inhabitants of Nowhere-Land came to greet us

Look someone got lost in spring and didn't find his Mercedes again
How did the car get there and why did the farmer sow his wheat around it?
I'll have to look again at the end of harvesting and see if the Merc' is still there

Wide open country
The harbour of Dagebüll and behind that the Isle of Föhr

The water is returning
Isn't it beautiful?
Sight all the way to the horizon!

Massive

The trailers have twenty axles and each axle can be steered

One of the ferries to the islands

The shopping area in the holiday-house estate
They are the only houses built of stone, because of regulations (all buildings build for the general public must comply with higher fire standards than living accommodation);
the wooden fronts are only a façade

They look like modern terrace houses.

Here another well built house in Dagebüll

The roof is a state of art; seen from the view of a roofer (back in the seventies I did a three year apprenticeship to learn to be a roofer; I loved that work)

I can't leave you without a flower

Bye, see you in the morning xxx

Roger McGuinn aka Jim McGuinn

Guitarist and one of the founders of the Byrds. I saw them live in Bardney, Lincolnshire 1971. They played unplugged; it was a great gig. I can't remember what they played but they recorded many a hit in the late sixties and seventies, such as the Bob Dylan song Mr Tambourine Man or my favourite Eight Miles High

Died on this Day:

 13th July 1995

Godtfred Kirk Christiansen

The third son of the Lego founder Ole Kirk Christiansen. He became the managing director of the Lego Group in 1956, when his father died in 1958 he became president and in 1960 after buying his brothers out the sole proprietor.
The company name Lego comes from the Danish words led godt; in English "play good"

Thoughts:

A lazy sunny Sunday afternoon, well nearly; it's ten in the morning and the sun doesn't want to come out from behind the clouds, it's Sunday though. One out of four facts right, I should go into politics.

Yesterday I had a great Saturday afternoon stroll through Niebüll. After thirty-four years you would think I know every nook and cranny of the town, but I don't. We went into the Christus Church for the first time; when I think about it we haven't been in the Apostol Church in Deezbüll (that's the southern part of Niebüll) either.

The Christus Church is quite plain if compared to the parish churches of England. I put it down to the different sources of religious affiliation: The Church of England was formed by King Henry VIII and he stole all the existing churches from the Roman Catholic Church and forced his religion (which is very similar to the Roman Catholic's) on them: whereas the German Protestant Church was sparked off by Martin Luther who in 1517 nailed his Protestant thesis on the door of the All Saint's Church in Wittenburg. The Protestant church started from scrach and as can be seen in their churches they were a very sober folk.

The bell tower is built outside the church, typical for the churches of this area

View through the church

Private pews for the gentry of times long past

The pulpit; contrary to the rest of the building the pulpits and the altars are elaborately decorated

The font

There is only this small stripe showing the original ceiling decoration

After so much culture we needed a cappuccino and a glas of sparkly water

What a beautiful rose!?

Have a good Sunday and cross your fingers for the German soccer team

Happy Birthday Edith!

12th July 1937

Bill Cosby

A comedian who also has the guts to talk critically about the black or coloured community in the USA.
On the 17th May 2004 during the 50th celebration of the Brown verses The Board of Education court case; the outcome of it helped cancel the segregation in the American schools, he criticized the Blacks forever blaming the Whites for their situation in life.
Here are some extracts from the essay:

"We Can't Blame White People"

They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk: Why you ain't, Where you is, What he drive, Where he stay, Where he work, Who you be... And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk.

Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living.

People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around. The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what? And they won't spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics.

I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was 2? Where were you when he was 12? Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn't know that he had a pistol? And where is the father? Or who is his father?

People putting their clothes on backward: Isn't that a sign of something gone wrong? People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn't that a sign of something? Or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up? Isn't it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body?

What part of Africa did this come from? We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don't know a thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail.

Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem. We have got to take the neighborhood back. People used to be ashamed. Today a woman has eight children with eight different 'husbands' — or men or whatever you call them now. We have millionaire football players who cannot read. We have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs. We as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids, you are hurting us. We have to start holding each other to a higher standard.

We cannot blame the white people any longer.

You might say that you have seen this before, it could be true; I read the same some weeks ago, but it impressed me so that I had to find the extracts myself and publish them on my blog.
Try reading as if it had nothing to do with race or colour; do you see a resemblance to the world of today, your world? I do!

Thoughts:

Hi everyone, "frisch und fröhlich?" It's Saturdayand it feels like Sunday, I slept in today and didn't get up until nine, since then two hours ago I've only just managed to eat breakfast ands have a shower. Two hours of toil; imagine if everyday was wasted like that; when I stand at the pearly gates and Gabriel asks me what footprint did I leave; I'd say sorry mate, can't rememeber I slept through it! Then again, if I ask myself if I'm happy with my life I'll jump up and say "Yes!!". I stayed in bed this morning because I was tired and didn't have any appointments, it was nice and cosy and gave me a chance to charge up my soul.
How would you like to see some more photos of my hometown Niebüll? Great, here they are enjoy them, if you've got the time: come around and I'll show you around!

This is the chemist that I wrote about last Monday.
The entrance has been refurbished
On 20th April 1933 Niebüll planted an oak tree that they called the "Hitler Eiche". Some drunken oaths urinated on it and it died; it was quickly replaced with the oak tree seen on the left of this photo.
The library
in it's last life it was a hotel
Another view of the library
The main drag looking towards the Rathaus square
Another look up the main drag
The car belongs to a girl.
I had three of these; they were not as pretty though.
One of my informative photos,
interesting isn't it.
I can't leave without a flower photo

That's it today,
see you all tomorrow xxx

George Gershwin

He was only thirty-eight when he died, but he left a very big footprint behind. I know I'm repeating myself but I love the musical "Porgy and Bess" especially when Louis Armstrong sings the part of Porgy and Ella Fitzgerald the part of Bess. Here they are with their studio interpretation of "It Ain't Necessary So"

Thoughts:

My mood picked up today, yesterday was terrible, I even stood in my own way.
We had our lunchtime sport again, that seems to be the only sport that I am participating in, it is about time I took my bicycle out again: the weekend is not far off and Heike has to work on Saturday; so I am aiming on that day. My weight is going up again, that isn't bad though; I felt too skinny before I went over to England on my holidays. The trouble is; when I take-off weight my face gets thin; at my age that means wrinkles and I look much older than I want to be.

The brambles are growing;
mmmh, I love bramble jam and compote

Wild rose

and rose hips

That's me in the right lower corner
Great selfie?

I took a shot of my hand also.
I never erase my fail shots, they can be quite interesting,  sometimes!
I know these aren't, I still find them funny.

See you all tomorrow
