Birthday of the Day:

21st July 1948

Cat Stevens aka Yusuf Islam

I loved his music when he called himself Cat Stevens; my girlfriend at the time Eileen also and my daughters love his album Tea for the Tillerman. His first hit recording came out in 1966 "I Love My Dog"; a catchy tune; it reached #28 in the British charts

Died on this Day:

21st July 1796

Robert Burns

A Scottish poet he died at thirty-seven. His best known poem is "Auld Lang Syne" (a version sung by Rod Stewart)

Thoughts:

Today we went to Leck and had a stroll around the village. It's much nicer than I thought; usually I only drive through the village to and from work. It has quiet roads with quaint thatched roof houses and well-built gentry houses.  I could imagine living in those areas otherwise it is quite a dump.
Thirty years ago, before perestroika, the village boasted two air-force camps and a few thousand soldiers; today there is only one regiment of soldiers and they don't come into or live in Leck like in the past. In the eighties they even had a strip joint, I remember going in there with Heike and her sister. What a dive; that was a once only visit.

The roof will not hold much longer.

20th July 1940

He played at Woodstock and revolutionized Latin American music by playing it in a rock style. One of his best recordings was "Black Magic Woman"

Died on this Day:

20th July 1973

Bruce Lee died at the age of 32

after taking a painkiller to treat a headache; his brain reacted to the medication and swelled from 1400 to 1575 grams a gain of 13%.

Thoughts:

This weather is getting on my nerves! I can't remember when my hayfever last took over my life. Before I get up in the morning my body is itching and when I get up I can't see because it's as if there was a screen stuck to my eyeballs, then the real itching starts; it's a wonder my eyes don't wear out from all the rubbing.

Today Heike couldn't sleep, so she got up at seven:thirty; much too early for me, it's Sunday and I don't get out of bed until nine. When I eventually got up she had been waiting an hour and a half for me and I was moody; the poor las'. It's not an easy life living with me!

Yesterday we had planned on cycling to Leck to visit our daughter and have a coffee in a cafe that opened last week. The idea was good but it didn't work out, my havfever put an end to our plans. Instead we walked through town and I took some door/entrance photos. Our plan today is Leck again, but in the car, that is if I can persuade Heike to go there with me (we had a bit of a niggle, because of my attitude or as I call it hayfever). Like I said it's taken over my life!

Friedrich Paulsen School
Main building

Friedrich Paulsen School
Behind this door there used to be a dormitory

Two well kept wooden doors
The house was built in the thirties; I don't know how old the doors are.
They won't be the original doors, the house was built in a workers estate and sold to the public in the eighties.

I like this house!
The cellar is built above ground and the house on top;
nothing for a handicap person

Today I end with a flower:
how original!

That's it for today
My wish is that I will be fresh and friendly tomorrow
We shall see.

Thoughts:

Yesterday I wrote under a photo this caption, "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose".
That got me thinking: What's the meaning of this line from Gertrude Stein's poem "Sacred Emily"? I came up with two versions:

The girl named Rose is as beautiful as a rose; that she be compared to a rose  and a rose is as beautiful as a rose

my second version, quite simple really:

Rose arose (as in rising) and a rose arose (also as in rising)

My preference is the first version; the good old Gertrude liked to play with the English language. I invested some  time and read all nine A4 sides of the poem and couldn't help laughing reading some of her rhymes; that do not rhyme.

Try this verse, I wonder if you understand it; I don't, but then it's art and art is made to appease and not to be understood:

Happy happy happy.
All the, chose.
Is a necessity.
Necessity.
Happy happy happy all the.
Happy happy happy all the.
Necessity.
Remain seated.
Come on come on come on on.
All the close.
Remain seated.
Happy.
All the.
Necessity.
Remain seated.
All the, close.

A plastic door, it looks good from a distance

Thoughts:

Today I was in a moody! Nothing was right, I got up had a shower and had to lie down again 'cause I was so tired; well it didn't brighten my day up.
My poor colleagues; it's Thursday which meant we had our Lunchtime gymnastics and they wanted photos to be taken for the Bilfinger magazine. (Information; the firm for which I work belongs to the Bilfinger Group.) I wasn't in the mood for this and told them so; only a few weeks ago I wrote about our gymnastic group in my blog and for this purpose I had taken loads of photos.
They weren't good enough, ok, so I let them use my camera to take some photos themselves. These were so miserable, that I took it in my hand and shot some photos myself.
Have a look and judge yourself which are more interesting, I won't tell which photos I took; I'll just number them:

001

002

003

004

005

Enough of this niggly mood,
I will leave you,
but beware I shall be returning tomorrow

17th July 1959

Billie Holiday

Jazz and blues singer/songwriter, she died at fourty-four, as a result of alcohol and drug abuse she died of liver cirrhosis. Here you can hear her singing "Lady Sings the Blues"

Thoughts:

Today I took a photo of a rose (well that's something new). When I opened the photo on my computer I was absolutely dissatisfied with it; the rose had water spots on it, so I thought why not play with it and see what I can make out of it; well here's the result:

the original photo

the first spots are removed

the scars of the spots are softened

Now I started on the ratty petals

Soften the jagged edges

and cut the flower out of the photo

now it can be set into any other photo

See what is possible in just a short time
Don't believe any photo, it could be faked!

See you all tomorrow; Bye!
