Name of the day:

Friedlinde

A Germanic name meaning lime wood shield (war equipment; a shield made of lime wood)

Event of the day:

1st May 1328

The first War of Scottish Independence comes to an end:

Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton - the Kingdom of England recognises the Kingdom of Scotland as an independent state.

First War of Independence
King Robert the Bruce signed the treaty on 17th March 1328 which was ratified by the English Parliament on 1st May 1328 in Northampton.

King Robert the Bruce
Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton

Scotland agreed to pay 100,000 pounds sterling and recognise the sovereign kingdom of England. In return England verified Robert the Bruce as the rightly King of Scotland and the borders as they were in 1286 when King Alexander III reigned over Scotland. Also a marriage was arranged; between the English sister of King Edward III Joanna (six years old) and the son of Robert Bruce the four year old David. They were married that same year. I wonder when the happy couple consummated their wedding?

Peace was short lived, Robert the Bruce reigned independent Scotland only one year before he died of leprosy. His five year old son King David II was too young to rule. Three years onward Kind Edward III of England, still humiliated by the loss of the Scottish crown, clubbed up with some unruly Scottish Lords and began the second War of Independence, which lasted twenty-five years, until 1357.

Here the scots came out on top and Scotland stayed independent until the Treaty of Union 1707 when Scotland, Ireland and England (which included the district of Wales) agreed upon joining the United Kingdom of Great Britain. How will it continue, I asked the same question in my blog three days ago? Personally I would prefer Scotland to stay part of the United Kingdom; we are friends and not fiends!!

Birthday of the day:

1st May 1852

Calamity Jane

aka Matha Jane Canary

In Princeton, Missouri, United States

Died 1st August 1903

in Terry, South Dakota

One of the real western heroines.
Calamity Jane

As you can read I’m a western fan. I loved going to the Saturday matinees to see such films as „The Lone Ranger“, (with his friend Tonto. What did „Kimosabe mean? I always thought „friend“, but then it could also mean „idiot“, or „pale face“. Does anybody know, or must I look it up in Google?)

Calamity was also one of the stars of the matinee; she stood her man and fought against red skins and outlaws. She ended her career as an artist in Wild Bill Hickok’s Wild West Show.
Oh yes, I nearly forgot; Doris Day played a beautiful, singing and gun touting Calamity in the musical comedy from 1953.

Died on this day:

1st May 2011

Henry Cooper

in Oxted, Surrey, England

Born 3rd May 1934

In Lambeth, London, England

Henry in his fighting years

Henry was the greatest Heavy Weight Champion of the Empire. He won nearly every title there was during his time as a boxer, only one title was out of his reach. (That’s good reach, boxing. Ha, ha aint ee funny?) The World Championship, Henry fought against Cassius Clay (aka Muhammad Ali) but lost. It was always because of his eye brows, when they got clipped they bleed and through the blood either he couldn’t see or the fight was stopped, technical knockout.
Cassius is on the ground,

but the fight ended, as usual, with a cut eye and Cassius on top

Let us remember this great man!

Here' a video showing Henry fighting Cassius in 1966:

Cycle ride of the day:

Hey, the first car drove past me, on the back roads. That was the first for three days.

The wind is picking up again; it’s coming out of the west-north-west. That’s not a bad direction; the air is fresher because the North Sea is only fourteen kilometres to the west. When the wind blows in from the east I always suffer from hay fever, the wind comes over land and brings dust and pollen with it.

Here’s another photo of the blooming rape (you’ll have to put up with it another two weeks, then the blossom gives way for the seed pods).
Don’t you think I’m brave? Yesterday, beehives were placed in the field in which I regularly stop to take a photo. This didn’t hinder me propping my bike up there to catch the scene. I’m usually scared shit of little biting, stinging insects.

Bye, see you all tomorrow. Have a good day
